Orinda’s public schools are one of the community’s most important shared assets. Nearly every child in Orinda attends a local public school, and families choose this community for the quality of education these schools provide. That excellence is not fully funded by public dollars. For decades, philanthropy has played a critical role in sustaining the programs and support that define an Orinda education. LET’S CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION The ONE Legacy Fund represents a commitment to future generations of Orinda students and the enduring strength of our public schools. To discuss a Legacy Fund gift, please contact Emily Allen, ONE Executive Director, at ONELegacyFund@oneorinda.org . ONE Legacy fund FAQs FAQs Frequently asked questions What is the purpose of the Legacy Fund? ONE’s mission is to protect the quality of public education in Orinda and ensure students have the teachers, programs, and opportunities that help them thrive. The ONE Legacy Fund is the next step in that promise, designed to generate stable, predictable revenue year after year. It strengthens the foundation built through annual giving and helps shield our schools from the volatility of public funding. How is a donation to the Legacy Fund different from a regular donation? Annual ONE-Ask donations support immediate needs for the current school year. Legacy Fund gifts are invested for long-term growth and follow a different strategy designed to generate sustained earnings over time. Is there a difference between investing in the Legacy Fund and giving to the ONE annual fund, also known as the ONE Ask? Yes. ONE Ask gifts are directed to the current year’s grants to the districts. Legacy Fund gifts are invested and used to support long-term goals and financial strength. How will my gift be invested? Gifts are invested at the direction of ONE’s Investment Committee according to ONE’s Investment Framework. Can I make a gift over time or through planned giving? Yes. Multi-year and planned gifts are welcome. How will I know the impact of my gift? Impact is reported in ONE’s Annual Report. Who oversees the Legacy Fund? The ONE Legacy Fund Committee, the ONE Investment Committee, and the ONE Board share oversight responsibilities. How much of the Legacy Fund’s earnings will be spent each year? The primary priority for Legacy Fund investment earnings will be to grow the Legacy Fund. Yet, distributions may be needed for policy and organizational needs identified by the ONE Board of Directors. Distributions are approved by the ONE Board of Directors and will never exceed the total investment earnings of the fiscal year, thus leaving the Legacy Fund’s corpus intact. What happens if the market value of the Legacy Fund drops? While investment markets do have fluctuations that can lead to short-term losses, the ONE Investment Framework is designed to safeguard principal and follows a conservative approach targeting steady long-term growth and moderate returns. Can I restrict my Legacy Fund gift for a specific purpose? Yes, restrictions can be discussed. ONE does not make curriculum and staffing decisions at either school district, so certain designations may fall outside our scope. Who decides how Legacy Fund returns are spent? As outlined in ONE Board policies, the ONE Board votes annually on the distribution of investment income. Policies are reviewed each year. How often is the Legacy Fund’s investment strategy reviewed? The Legacy Fund Committee meets regularly. The Legacy Fund policy is reviewed annually, and the Investment Framework is reviewed quarterly. Can I leave a gift to the Legacy Fund in my estate? Yes. Estate gifts are welcomed and can be structured in several ways. How does the Legacy Fund fit into ONE’s overall financial strategy? Legacy Fund income strengthens ONE’s long-term financial position. PC Reserve investment income supports a portion of the operating budget. As Parents’ Clubs continue investing their reserves in campus improvements, the Legacy Fund provides enduring stability and investment capacity for the community. How are the Parents’ Club (PC) reserves structured with ONE? PC reserves belong to each school’s Parents’ Club. Their boards determine how those funds are used. ONE manages the pooled investments under the operating agreement with all six PCs. The investment income generated from this pool is owned by ONE and has helped grow the Legacy Fund from $1.2M in 2020 to $2M in 2025. Who owns the PC reserves? Each Parents’ Club retains ownership of its reserves and decides how to use them. Many boards direct reserve funds to facility improvements such as playgrounds, gardens, and library upgrades. How is the Legacy Fund different from the reserve fund? Reserve funds are owned and controlled by each school’s Parents’ Club. ONE manages the investments, but the reserves themselves belong to the PCs. The Legacy Fund is governed by ONE’s Board of Directors. donate a vehicle

- WHAT WE DO | ONE Orinda
The goal of ONE Orinda is to bring more resources to support Orinda schools by consolidating and streamlining fundraising under a new foundation. what we do how funding works why fundraising is essential one dollars at work what we do ONE bridges the gap between what the public funding covers and what our students truly need. In partnership with Parents’ Clubs and the broader Orinda community, including school families, alumni, and local businesses, ONE raises the funds that sustain the programs and staff essential to an exceptional education. From smaller class sizes to STEAM and technology, wellness centers, electives, and expanded high school offerings, ONE’s grants directly fund what sets Orinda’s schools apart. join us WHY FUNDRAISING IS ESSENTIAL WHY FUNDRAISING IS essential Excellence in Orinda’s public schools isn’t guaranteed - it’s funded. California ranks near the bottom nationally in per-student public education funding. Orinda receives among the least in the state. As costs rise and state support lags, a growing shortfall threatens the quality of education in our schools. That’s why ONE exists: to bridge the gap. Each year, we work with our school districts to identify exactly what’s at risk. ONE’s grants, built directly into district budgets, fund teachers, academic counselors, electives, supplies, and services that would otherwise be reduced or eliminated. For the 2025-26 school year, ONE must raise $5.7 million to meet the needs of all six Orinda public schools. Our schools are a cornerstone of Orinda’s identity. Preserving that excellence depends on all of us. how funding works Public education in Orinda is funded through a combination of state dollars, local parcel taxes, bond measures, and community fundraising - each with a distinct and limited role. STATE FUNDING California provides only a portion of basic education costs, and Orinda receives some of the lowest funding in the state. PARCEL TAXES Approved by Orinda voters, parcel taxes help fund teacher salaries. These dollars are vital but restricted. BOND MEASURES Bond funds are designated for facility upgrades and maintenance. They cannot be used for programs, personnel, or classroom resources. ONE FUNDRAISING ONE raises private dollars from school families, community members, and local businesses to fund the people and programs that public dollars don’t cover. This support isn’t supplemental, it’s essential to delivering the well-rounded, high-quality education Orinda schools are known for. "It takes an entire community to educate our students, and Orinda exemplifies that model. Our schools and our students benefit from the tremendous generosity of our highly engaged community to ensure that we offer education at the highest level. OUSD is grateful for the incredible partnership with ONE and the Orinda community.” -- Aida Glimme, Superintendent Orinda Union School District ONE Dollars At Work Orinda’s excellence is powered by community giving. Students often choose to enter the STEAM Lab during recess, working on a variety of intriguing projects. Orinda Intermediate School has a history of excellence in education and your donations directly fund the 27 electives and numerous programs benefiting all OIS students. Orinda Union School District (OUSD) is one of the lowest-funded school districts in the state. To bridge the gap between what the state provides and what our school needs to maintain its current level of programming, we need to raise $1,022,000. This budget is created in collaboration with our OIS principal, Andrea Powers, OIS Parents’ Club, and OIS teachers. It reflects what OIS needs to maintain core programs, including electives such as foreign languages, computer programming, art, drama, debate, woodshop, band, and chorus. Donations also support lunchtime clubs, sports, the OIS library and librarian, wellness counselors, classroom technology, and Bulldog Theater.
